More than 1 in 3 people in the UK will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime1

Being diagnosed with an illness can cause a lot of anxiety – even if it’s at an early stage or of a less severe form. You may have to take time off work for treatment, which can cause stress and financial worries.

People say that after the diagnosis itself, money worries are their biggest concern. Four in five cancer patients are hit with an average cost of £570 a month and one in five people have problems paying their bills, rent or mortgage2.

Critical Illness vs Serious Illness Cover – What is the difference?

A typical Critical Illness policy will pay out a tax-free lump sum if you are diagnosed as having one of the specific life-threatening conditions as defined in the policy.

Our Serious Illness Cover pays out a tax-free lump sum if you are diagnosed with any of the conditions we cover but we’ll pay you an amount based on the severity of your condition. This means if you make a claim for a condition that pays out part of your cover amount, we keep covering you for the remaining amount so you can claim again.

Serious Illness Cover at a glance:

  • Covers you for more conditions than any other insurer. That’s why we cover over 170 conditions under our Comprehensive Serious Illness Cover. That’s nearly 4 times as many as the typical critical illness policy*.
  • Defaqto award logo
  • 5-star rating by Defaqto. Ten times and counting. Our Serious Illness Cover has been awarded a 5-star rating by Defaqto every year since it was launched in 2007.
  • Covers all heart attacks and all strokes. If a doctor tells you you’ve had a heart attack or a stroke, we pay out. The amount we pay depends on the severity of your condition. It means we’re able to cover all types of heart attack and all strokes.
  • You’re up to 21/2 times more likely to get a payout**. Typical critical illness policies would pay out if you had a severe condition – for example, if you lost your sight in both eyes. We’d pay out in these circumstances too, but we understand that it’s not just the most severe form of a condition that affects people’s lives. So we also pay out a percentage of your cover amount for things that aren’t as severe. For example, if you lost sight in one eye, we would pay out 15% of your cover amount. Along with the number of conditions we cover, this means that you’re 21/2 times more likely to get a payout from us compared to a typical critical illness policy**.
  • Unique benefits. From 2016, we’ve introduced our Family Benefit on all plans to help support a family at a special stage in life, covering pregnancy complications and more.
